What would I go back in time and tell myself, to be a better artist? This. This piece of advice is something I didn't figure out until YEARS after I began drawing. Hope it helps you.
There are always small nuances when it comes to drawing that aren’t about the finesse or the detail — it’s about the BONES. The bones are what props our creations up and gives it promise. With bad bones, we will easily come out the other side with ‘bad’ art (though I try not to consider any art bad — let’s instead call it… disappointing, ok?).
If you want good bones, that means having a good groundwork for your piece. That means your sketch, your composition, your balance. And part of that directly ties in to THIS video. So please, give it a watch. It’s a very straight forward explanation for a very easy to remember piece of advice. Apply it to EVERYTHING, not just poses! Think of it when making compositions, character silhouettes, etc.
Asymmetry and balance. Interest and flow. These are your friends.
Honestly, if I knew these things back in my younger years, then I would have been a fair bit further along a lot sooner. So I hope it helps you!
All the best. Nägemist!
